The procedure is done under sedation to make it essentially painless.  Flexible Sigmoidoscopy – a brief office procedure that screens for potentially more troublesome colon conditions, such as polyps and cancer. Endoscopy involves the passage of lighted tubes through the bowel to evaluate and treat problems such as cancer, polyps, (pre-cancerous growths) and inflammatory conditions. The names used to describe these procedures include proctoscopy (procto), proctosigmoidoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, and colonoscopy.
